After Arvedui the North-kingdom ended, for the Dúnedain were now few and all the peoples of Eriador diminished. Yet the line of the kings was continued by the Chieftains of the Dúnedain.
– Appendix A: Annals of the Kings and Rulers
The Angle is a region in the east of Eriador, in the foothills of the Misty Mountains. It is inhabited by the secretive, final remnants of the Dúnedain of the North. Located between the rivers Mitheithel and Bruinen, and south of the Trollshaws, it is seldom heard of among outsiders.
History
Early in the Third Age, the Angle was a part of Arnor, and subsequently Rhudaur after the collapse of the former into three successor states. As it is defensible territory, various fortifications were built up by Rhudaur in the region. As Rhudaur fell under the shadow of Angmar, so too did the Angle, and it was under the control of the Witch-king’s vassal state. In T.A. 1150, Stoors coming over the mountains from the Vale of Anduin settled in the Angle, but moved on 200 years later for pastures new. After the fall of Arthedain, the final successor state to Arnor, the Dúnedain of the North gradually collected in the Angle. The Rangers of the North operate out of the Angle, protecting the ordinary folk of Eriador from evil, whilst living off the land.
Geography
In the foothills of the Misty Mountains, the Angle features rugged terrain, making it ideal to hide in. It is flanked by two sizable rivers and features several large pockets of woodland. There are no villages as such, but several homesteads of various sizes scattered around the region, as well as the ruins of old fortifications. Although the northern border of the Angle is hazier, it is generally accepted to be along the East Road, or the southern hills of the Trollshaws.
Climate
Similar to the Trollshaws just to the north, the Angle is generally cold and wet.
Culture
As they are the final remnants of the Northern Kingdom of the Dúnedain, the people of the Angle are secretive and conservative, preserving their culture however they can, such as through Arnorian tapestries and traditions.
Governance
The heir of Isildur is the hereditary Chieftain of the Dúnedain, and has some level of authority. Since the Chieftain is often away performing their duties as a Ranger, they are presumably deputised by someone else.
Economy
There is no Angle economy to speak of, but presumably there is some internal trade between homesteads.
